Na rozdíl od jiných antropologických studií zaměřujících se převážně na východoslovenské osady zvolil Jan Ort jako cíl svého terénního výzkumu obec s reputací „bezproblémového soužití“ mezi jazykově i etnicky heterogenními obyvateli. Kniha nabízí etnografickou kritiku této idylické představy a ukazuje, jak současný stav souvisí s historickou transformací, naturalizací symbolických a materiálních nerovností, hranic a hierarchií, ale zároveň i se způsoby jejich vyjednávání. Výsledkem je text plný zajímavých etnografických popisů a postřehů, které v úhrnu poskytují odpověď na jednu z hlavních otázek textu: Kdo je tu místní?.
